Supporting the Pima County Transition Center
SUPPORT THE TRANSITION CENTER GOING 24/7
The Pima County Justice Services Department established the Transition Center 20 months ago in a modular building outside the Pima County Adult Detention Center. People leaving the jail on Monday through Friday from 8am to midnight can meet with someone with lived experience of incarceration to help them with first steps in avoiding a return to custody. The program has been very successful and needs to be expanded. I remember at an SCT event six years ago my friend, Pete Thomas, described the experience of his last release from prison, being driven in a van and dropped off at Stone and Speedway at 2am with a white box of his belongings. Not much is open at 2am, and what is open is frequently not a good influence. An online petition has started to support expanding operations of the Transition Center to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
